Visual Reading course

Visual Reading is a significant upgrade on SuperReading, based on an understanding of eye movement (saccades) while reading and the application of metacognitive reading strategies.

Visual Reading is NOT SPEED READING because it prioritises comprehension over speed, even though speed will increase dramatically. Using structured saccade overlays, readers are able to use their own reading materials to practice and can double their reading effectiveness in less time than it currently takes to read a book (and they get to read a book too!)

Visual Reading gives dyslexic readers the skills they need to absorb information equally in our competitive world. In fact, most of our dyslexic readers end up with Reading Effectiveness scores surpassing those of non-dyslexic readers.

We focus mostly on Comprehension and Accuracy. The speed is there, but what good is speed if you don’t recall what you read? It is the patented structured saccade overlays, which make the difference. By using the overlays with real books, over a matter of three to twelve weeks, dyslexic readers gain the ability to process multiple words at a glance (or “fixation”). Coupled with our other metacognitive reading techniques and strategies, reading becomes easier, more productive and they can better recall what they read.

NeuroKnowHow’s AT tutoring service and Specialist Study Skills support incorporates strategies that link in with the Visual Reading course techniques. This allows you to get the most of your Non Medical Helper support and Assistive Technology, helping you to create your building blocks for success.

Who would benefit?

Anyone who has been diagnosed as dyslexic. We have also found that Visual Reading is effective for those with a diagnosis of ADHD and other learning challenges, though these have not been independently verified. However, according to Psychiatrist and ADHD specialist Dr Muhammad Arif, a course that trains individuals to read at a faster speed would be beneficial for individuals diagnosed as ADHD or ADD. The Visual Reading course does train participants to read at higher speeds, with a measured emphasis on comprehension and accuracy. According to Dr. Cooper, it would appear that the benefits gained from Visual Reading are only a matter of time and effort.

Needs Assessors can recommend this course for students in receipt of the Disabled Student’s Allowance
